About 40 singers will offer Cristóbal de Morales’ “Missa de Beata Virgine” to the public as the ordinary for a Vatican II (Novus Ordo) Latin Mass starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 25 in the sanctuary of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 3811 Oak Lawn Ave., Dallas. All are welcome to hear the music. The singers, from Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, Tulsa and Oklahoma City, OK, and as far away as Boston, MA, attend this “Renaissance Polyphony Weekend” every year. By Sunday afternoon, they will have rehearsed Morales’ work, some motets and Gregorian chants for portions of three days before singing the Mass. Rehearsals will be held on the Trinity campus. This year is the 24th anniversary for the Renaissance Polyphony Weekend, led by Dr. William P. Mahrt of Stanford University in Northern California. Dr. Mahrt, president of the Church Music Association of America and editor of its journal, “Sacred Music,” teaches musicology at Stanford and gives workshops across the U.S. on Gregorian chant and sacred Renaissance polyphony. The workshop is sponsored by Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and the Renaissance Polyphony Project.
