About 40 years ago, while driving to south Florida, I saw a sign for Jacksonville city limits and drove for about 30 minutes through nothing but evergreen forest. Later I learned that Jacksonville is the largest city by area, at 747 square miles, in the lower 48. Ive driven through Mobile, Alabama many times but just a couple weeks ago I was passing thru there again when I spotted the city limits sign. I drove for quite awhile before I saw any signs of civilization and made a mental note to check on Mobiles area. Turns out Mobile is the 64th largest city by area, at 139 square miles, bigger than Philadelphia, Detroit, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Portland, Oregon and Seattle. Mobile clocks in at #122 in population.
