About 6 years ago, I became involved with something called Elder Friends. Its a program that pairs seniors with younger folks (like me, I guess) for friendship and assistance. Mostly, I get called to install shower bars or bring heavy loads of groceries in. But with at least one couple here in town, Ive cultivated a genuine and mutually-beneficial friendship over the years. Mostly, Ive helped them figure out their electronics and their computers. Rhoda is a music lover who is very proud of her Bang & Olufsen turntable and her collection of vintage vinyl. Don is a retired commercial airline navigator and co-pilot who will pontificate on the finer points of aviation for as long as youll let him. Theyre politically-active, unapologetically opinionated, and both are strident atheists. I guess you can see why I might enjoy their company. So tonight, after fixing an issue with their sound system, I spent the evening enjoying a beer and rocking some Berlioz with them. They kept finding stuff to have me fix and different esoteric topics to discuss. It was just grand. Im pretty sure I enjoyed the evening more than they did.
