About 80 years ago, a bunch of wily ex-pats formed a group called the HASH. They say they are a drinking group with a running problem. Meeting weekly all over the world - Tiawan, Columbia, D.C., Montreal, Melbourne, Istanbul, etc. - a run is spontaneously formed by the hares of which the other members chase down with great fervor through the streets and allies of foreign cities (a great way to familiarize yourself with a new locale). Every kilo or so, the hares mark with chalk their route, giving you three options from which to choose. If after making your choice you come to a marker that says, Oh, sh*#!, you must backtrack to the original marker and choose a different route. So, the distance you run is based on how successful you are at guessing the hares route. There are three checkpoints along the way, of which you swill beer or hydrate with water. I ran through hutongs, parks and congested streets, totalling13 kilometers. At the end, we all stand in a circle, singing vulgar parodies, drinking the libation of your choice, humiliating each other one by one and laughing. The guy in the white coat is the master of ceremonies. He is currently berating me by reminiscing about how many chinese children I scared as I ran down the street like some rabid, hairy monster. Everyone gets a name in this secret society. You have to join to learn mine. There were about 35 on this Hash: some local; some foreigners... Great fun!
