About Nagpur Division of CENTRAL RAILWAY: Railways started in Nagpur way back in 1867 when portion of Bombay-Bhusaval-Nagpur line was opened for traffic.Today, Nagpur division has 988.336 route KMs. consisting of 601.82 KMs Main Line, 352.096 KMs Branch Line and 34.42 KMs of Narrow Guage, covering 115 stations across eight districts of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. In addition, it has 198.84 KMs in 16 private sidings, 59.986 KMs in nine Assisted Sidings, and 139.869 KMs in 3 defence sidings.It has 11 tunnels and two major Ghat sections with ruling gradient of 1:60 (rising) and 1:65 (falling) in Itarsi-Nagpur Section. Nagpur division has GT Route from Itarsi to Ballarshah (of 508 Kms length, fit for 120 Kmph speed) and Mumbai-Howrah route from Nagpur to Badnera. North-South and East-West traffic criss-crosses through the Division, making its Nagpur-Wardha section one of the busiest in Indian Railways. It has branch lines connecting Amla-Chhindwara on Broad Guage and Pulgaon-Arvi in Narrow Guage. Major share of originating freight traffic comes from coal sidings located at Hiradgarh, Parasia, Umrer, Rajur, Majri, Wani, Ghugus, Ballarshah and Chandrapur. Loading of other commodities like cement, clinker and DOC also contributes to freight traffic. Division has Freight Examination Depot & Inland Container Depot at Ajni. On an average 125 Mail/Express/ Passengers trains carrying one lakh passengers and 174 freight trains (interchange) are run by the division daily. During 2013-14, Total Originating Earning is Rs 2533.06 Crs, against 2430.31 Crs year 2012-13, showing a rise of 4.2 % over last year. Passenger earning is Rs 391.16 Crs., against 331.00 Crs year 2012-13 showing a rise of 18.2 % over last year. Coal is the major commodity loaded by division.Western Coalfields is the major contributor. Cement plants of Ultratech, Murli Agro, Manikgarh Cement, Ispat Ltd, MEL Ltd, and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd are other major customers. Movement of coal rakes from South Eastern Coalfields and empties to SECR are also done. Within the division, coal is moved to Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Plant at Chandrapur and Sarni Power Plant. Electric Loco shed, Ajni is holding 195 Locomotives. Out of this, 135 Locomotives are 3 phase Locomotives, which is highest in Indian Railways and 60 locomotives are conventional WAG-7 type.. ABOUT NAGPUR CITY Nagpur, the winter capital of the state of Maharashtra, is the largest city in central India and third largest city in Maharashtra after Mumbai and Pune. With a population of 4,653,171 (2011) Nagpur is the 9th largest urban conglomeration in India. It has also recently been ranked as the second greenest city of India after Bangalore. In addition to being the seat of annual winter session of Maharashtra state assembly Vidhan Sabha, Nagpur is also a major commercial and political center of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, and is also famous throughout the country as Orange City for being a major trade center of oranges that are cultivated in the region. Nagpur lies on the Deccan plateau of the Indian Peninsula and has a mean altitude of 310 meters above sea level. Nagpur lies precisely at the center of the country with the Zero Mile Marker indicating the geographical center of India. The city was founded by the Gonds but later became part of the Maratha Empire under the Bhonsles. The British East India Company took over Nagpur in the 19th century and made it the capital of the Central Provinces and Berar. After the first reorganisation of states, the city lost its capital status but according to the informal Nagpur Pact between political leaders it was made the second capital of Maharashtra. Nagpur is also declared, Tiger Capital of India” as it connects many Tiger Reserves in India to the world. ECONOMY: MIDC, Hingna, is a sprawling industrial estate having more than 900 small and medium industrial units. The prominent ones are tractor manufacturing plant of Mahindra and Mahindra, the casting units of NECO Ltd, the countrys biggest casting group, besides units of International Combustions, Bajaj group, Candico, Ajanta toothbrushes, and Vicco Laboratories. A new industrial estate, billed as one of the largest in the country, has come up at Butibori, some 28 KMs. to the South of Nagpur. Its biggest unit is Indo Rama Synthetics (investment over Rs 2500 crore) that manufactures synthetic polyester yarn. Nagpur also has a number of other textile units, coal-based power plants, coal mines of WCL, cement manufacturing units, coal & manganese mines in its vicinity. The Inland Container Depot at Nagpur being run by CONCOR is among the fastest growing in the country. Nagpurs central geographical location has led to plans to establish a multi-modal cargo hub. It is to have a Special Economic Zone attached that is already attracting investment by some of the top-notch IT companies of India including Infosys and Wipro. Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport (MIHAN) at Nagpur is the biggest economical development project currently underway in India in terms of investment. MIHAN is a project spread over an area of 4354 Hectares consisting of two parts namely International airport to act as a cargo hub and a Special Economic Zone with residential zone covering a total area of 40.25 sq. km. Aircraft major Boeing is setting up an Aircraft Maintenance Unit of the Boeing Corporation at Nagpur. At least 25 new Railway sidings of various business houses are coming up in the near future around Nagpur, with a total projected investment of Rs. 864.38 crores. Sidings of Wardha Power House & Vimla Infrastructure have been commissioned in the recent past.
