About Supplements for Relaxation VS Sedation: With all the research and experimentation Im doing for insomnia supplementation, Ive been force to see theres a big difference between a drug that promotes relaxation, instead of sedation. To wit, relaxation calms the brain. Its for anxiety and tension. Sedation actually makes you drowsy and helps you sleep. A lot of the things Ive been looking at are working very well in the anxiety arena. So much so, that I think Ive got a ton of options for making a day time anxiety cocktail. This seems to include: GABA Rescue Remedy L-Tryptophan Curcumin Inositol (Vitamin B-8) Theamine (not tried yet) Magnesium (yet to try) As for actual sedating, options seem more limited. I havent experimented enough with Melatonin, which Im not sure where to slot. These things produce actual sedation: Antihistamines (which is not a supplement. It is an OTC) Ambien (this is a hard core sleep prescription medication - talk to your doctor) Other sleep prescription medications (Sonata, Lunesta: I have no experience with these) Ativan (prescription medication for anxiety, off-label use for sleep) Booze (it works, but Im not recommending this) None of these are supplements. As you can see, I havent found a true supplement yet that actually promotes sedation, rather than relaxation. These herbs and supplements are supposed to promote sedation (I havent taken enough of any of these to offer an opinion yet): Chamomile Valerian Hops (yes, the kind in beer) Passionflower Kava (dangerous to the liver - dont take this) 5-HTP (there seem to be common stomach issues with this) Lemon Balm Scullcap Linden St. Johns Wort (which makes me vomit) Alamus California poppy Catnip Jamaican dogwood Yerba mansa NOTE on Cannabis: I dont have enough experience to offer a comment on whether this provides relaxation or sedation. Also, its not legal in some places. Feel free to offer your option on this as a sleep aid in the comments. Guess what? Im NOT A DOCTOR. Im only writing down my personal experiences. This discussion continues in the comments.
