About a month ago, I was at the park with my kids. There were about 6 other kids there whose moms were chatting at the other end of the playground. I repeatedly asked these kids to stop chasing Van and grabbing his clothing and doing other things that were causing him anxiety. I tried to engage them in games and tried to be kind and playful as I tried to help them interact with Van in a better way. At one point, Coco came to me needing her sweater from the car. I ran to the car, 20 feet away, and came back to the playground to hear from underneath the play structure a voice say, I want a turn kicking him. In a matter of seconds, these kids had pinned my five year old son under the play structure, and were taking turns kicking him. Their own mothers were totally oblivious to what was taking place. Are we teaching our kids kindness? Are we helping them understand that they wont understand or agree with everyone they meet, but that they still need to treat them with gentleness? I dread the day that my son will be under someone elses supervision and something bullying like this will be overlooked. This little boy could be mine. He could be yours.
