About a year and a half ago, I sat in a small room at Oyler School in Cincinnati with Bill De Blasio, then a long-shot candidate to be New York Citys next Mayor. He was visiting to learn about Cincinnatis model of schools as Community Learning Centers (round-the-clock hubs bustling with partnerships intended to remove barriers to student to learning and to spark neighborhood revitalization). De Blasio kept asking one smart, thoughtful question after another - his genuine curiosity and interest in our work were very clear. Little could we have known just how interested he was. Now Mayor De Blasio has said he wants to take 100 New York City Public Schools and turn them into Community Learning Centers modeled after Cincinnati. So fast-forward to last night, where alongside Cincinnatis leading Community Learning Center champions and practitioners, we sat with NYC Deputy Mayor Richard Buery, who is charged with making it happen, and with the President of New Yorks United Federation of Teachers Michael Mulgrew, whos been a tremendous advocate for this work, and talked about how to export one of Cincinnatis best policies and put it into practice in The Big Apple. Cincinnati, you should feel proud for the way in which youve helped turn your school system around and created a genuine national model.
