About two weeks ago, the Express News published my column where I detailed how Medicare Advantage Insurance Companies are ignoring this landmark federal court order, which outlawed Medicare and insurance companies from cutting benefits from the elderly and the disabled solely on the basis that they have plateaued in their therapy. I became aware of this court order while doing legal research inside my moms hospital room days after she suffered a stroke after Christmas last year. Since then, people have been reaching out to me for more information--and I do my best in helping them with their own insurance companies. This past week, a woman working for a local doctor who treats primarily senior citizens called me to ask for my email address because the doctor wants to stay in contact with me. I learned today that an elderly man cut out my article and will be using the Jimmo vs. Sebelius case in his fight against an insurance company which is discontinuing therapy for his beloved wife. And--a friend reached out to me after a local nursing home apparently is doing something similar to his mother. I finally found my lifes work. It was never to be a rich lawyer. I was destined to help the most vulnerable in our society--our senior citizens--our disabled--our children. This is the reason why I chose to celebrate my birthday this year--to ask my Facebook friends who attend if they would consider making a nominal contribution that I can send to the non-profit legal foundation which litigated the Jimmo case--this court order was an immense help to me in keeping the therapy ongoing for my mom--who is making progress--it took time--but she is making baby steps in her recovery. In a few days, I will be addressing several hundred senior citizens on Medicare--and I will keep you posted on the details. In addition--I learned today that my mothers insurance company may very well be making major changes in their policies so that victims such as mom can obtain therapy benefits without having to have a lawyer pound his fist on their conference tables the way that I have been over the past 10 months. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will continue. In the meantime--I look forward to helping that elderly man who cut out my column from his newspaper and has it at his side. I promise to help him--and all others--who are being shafted by the Medicare Advantage Insurance companies. God bless each and everyone of you... --Gabe
