Abuja - The House of Representatives has mandated several committees to investigate the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment exercise that led to the death of over 16 job seekers last Saturday. The Committees of Interior, Labour, Public Service and Justice were tasked with probing the setback. The death of the youth has dominated proceeding in the house. Members who spoke during the debates about the weekend incident in Abuja and other centres across the country posed questions why the Interior Ministry as well as the Immigration Service went on to sell thousands of forms to Nigerians, even when the vacancies were not close to the number of forms sold. The lawmakers also urged the federal government to liaise with states and local governments to evolve job creation scheme that will target the Nigerian youth, especially those interested in the small businesses. Sunday Karimi, who first brought the motion on the immigration tragedy at the weekend, said more than 1 million Nigerian youth scrambled for 4 500 job placements, which led to the deaths of over16 job-seekers, including three pregnant women. “In Calabar, Ogun, Lagos and many other centres, candidates were flogged and abused by security personnel all in a bid to secure white collar job,” he said. Despite the fact that applicants were requested to come to the centres in their sport outfits, no physical test was conducted and only about 20 percent of the candidates were able to participate in recruitment process as a result of its poor organisation, it was established. Karimi said NIS had realised “approximately N1 billion from the sales of recruitment forms.” Another legislator, Ahmed Babba, said in view of the number of forms sold to Nigerians, which was beyond the required number of applicants, the recruitment exercise had turned out to be a scam. He then called for the proper investigation of the stampede. The House therefore resolved that any subsequent recruitment exercise by any federal agency must be conducted in an environment that was conducive and urged that future exercises must be done via internet-mediated process.
