Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has issued a threat of closing down polytechnic institutions by the end of the week if government does not honour the agreements reached. With this threat, polytechnic students across the nation may be thrown out of classes as the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) will resume their suspended industrial action because the federal government is yet to fulfil the agreement signed with the union. In a communiqué at the end of the National Executive Council of the Union held at the Federal Polytechnic, Bida, it asked the Federal Government to address issues bordering on promises and agreements reached before the suspension of the strike action in July this year. ASUP Publicity Secretary, Clement Selchum says government needs to take up some pertinent issues ranging from Needs assessments of Polytechnics, corresponding funding, constituting of governing councils of some polytechnics and welfare of staff among other issues. Chairman of the Union in Plateau State Polytechnic, Victor Dawurang also urged the federal and state governments to honour agreements reached with the Union so as to avoid total collapse of the system. Meanwhile, the students knowing that they are the ones to bear the brunt are appealing to the union and government to dialogue and settle all issues in order to avoid another setback in the educational system in the country, as the issue of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is still lingering without any solution in sight.
