Academy Awards nominations are announced. I intend to briefly - TopicsExpress

Academy Awards nominations are announced. I intend to briefly discuss my opinions about the possible winners in some categories in the next few days. Those interested, can comment and give their views. Those not, can simply marvel on the amount of free time I have. Best Actor: Steve Carell ( Foxcatcher)- Comedian trying his hand at drama does not always work. It has worked for Steve from Office fame as he gets his first nod playing a schizophrenic murderous billionaire. Much as I would like him to win, I feel in this category he is the lightweight. Bradley Cooper (American Sniper)- Bradley of the Hangover fame has scored a hat-trick with his 3rd consecutive nomination. He was previously nominatied in Silver Lining Playbook and American Hustle resp. This time he has Clint Eastwood as the director in his corner. Eastwood has directed Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Hillary Swank to academy awards. Cooper hopes it rubs off on him too. But again, he would not be a front runner this year either. Benedict Cumberbatch (The imitation game)- British heart throb in his breakthrough role in the major motion pictures with the true and tragic story of genius mathematician Alan Turing who broke the code that saved millions of allied soliders lives and ended the war early and yet this man spent his last years on the wrong side of the law. This is my sentimental pick since Academy has always been unkind to good looking lead men ( right Leonardo Di Caprio??) and also the imitation game seems like the kind of smart thriller that you would wish to be made more often. Michel Keaton (Birdman)- think of Mickey Rourke in Wrestler in 2009 with possibly less angst in personal life. Keaton remains one of the finest most consistent actor that Hollywood always chose to ignore. He gets to showcase his immense depth in the role of a former superhero actor trying for one last shot at fame. The kind of stories we love. Keaton won a Globe for this effort earlier this week. In my mind he is the front runner this year. Eddie Redmyne ( the theory of everything)- This relatively unknown young actor gets his first nod playing the genius Stephen Hawking. Good gig to be nominated for. And like Keaton Eddie won the globe in drama category. He is second favorite but I feel Keaton has done just enough to go home with the little fella this year. My pick- Michel Keaton (the birdman).
