“Access to justice is good for the people, the economy, and the integrity of the rule of law. The case is compelling, and advocates must do a better job of making it. “One way is to put a face on the problem by having real clients make public statements about the difference legal aid made. During one Texas legislative session, a victim of domestic violence told how a legal aid lawyer had extricated her from a potentially deadly situation. Turning to the Supreme Court justices and legislators present, she said, ‘You saved my life.’ That’s powerful, and true, and it happens every day.” Chief Justice Nathan L. Hecht of the Texas Supreme Court will be the keynote speaker at the first meeting of the Florida Commission on Access to Civil Justice Jan. 16.
