According to Oliver Sacks, neurologist and best-selling author, Music has more ability to activate more parts of the brain than any other stimulus. That is the premise of the inspiring documentary Alive Inside which explores musics capacity to reawaken people who were previously locked inside themselves due to Alzheimers disease. The documentary chronicles the experiences of individuals who have been revitalized after listening to music. Impressively, the film won the 2014 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award. It fascinates me how we continue to learn new ways the human mind functions and how leveraging even a small percentage of its abilities can have an exponential effect. As a lifelong learner and teacher this movie reminds me that people learn in different ways and that, to really break through to students, sometimes we need to embrace all modalities of learning, especially those that integrate interactivity and media. What have been your experiences using music as an educator, practitioner, or even just as an independent individual?
