According to Tibetan medicine a disease is regarded as a result of a long-standing pathological process, and most treatments should be aimed at a correspondingly gradual recovery. Tibetan medical tradition views disease as a result of long-standing abuse from stress on the body, considers that the gastrointestinal system is central to the origins of a disease, that the treatment needs to support gastrointestinal system and the body’s natural defense mechanisms, and that the entire body is affected by any disease despite the obvious symptoms. To insure that improvement related to therapy is gradual, the treatment with an herbal drug usually starts with one third of the maximum therapeutic dose, with full dose attained over a period of weeks. Usually therapy spans for approximately three months and is followed by a one month break and re-evaluation. If improvement has not been accomplished the cycle of treatment is repeated. The one-month break between cycles was designed for re-evaluation of the patient and to restore physiological defense mechanisms. Additional reading: (Tibetan Medicine. Badmaev, V. 1999 (May).
