According to a report by Paultan.org ( paultan.org/2014/05/30/proton-geely-china/ ), Malaysia Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has revealed that Proton Holdings Bhd will work with Chinese carmaker Geely Automobile Holdings. “The areas of the cooperation explored include vehicle design, sourcing, manufacturing, marketing, import and distribution for ASEAN and the China market,” Najib said. So who is Geely? Founded in 1986 as a refrigerator-maker, Geely manufactured motorcycles, then small vans in the 90s. Geely car production began in 2002. In 2003 it remained the only domestic car manufacturer unrelated to the Chinese state. Geely then got the world’s attention when in 2008, they approached Ford about a possible takeover of Volvo Cars. A deal with Ford was reached in late March and completed in early August 2010; Volvo continues to operate independent of its new owners. Besides Volvo, Geely also sells passenger cars domestically under the Emgrand, Englon, Geely and Gleagle brand names. Though those cars are merely rebated of existing Geely range.
