According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 22.5 million U.S. residents, ages 12 and older, meet the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 2000) diagnostic criteria for substance abuse or dependence, which is equivalent to 8.9% of the U.S. population. The highest rate of substance abuse of or dependence on an illicit drug was with marijuana, followed by pain relievers and cocaine. And dopers want to believe there is no correlation between marijuana use and the subsequent use of other narcotics.
