According to their website, IMATA recognizes its role and responsibilities to the continued existence of oceanaria, aquaria, and laboratories housing marine mammals. Sadly, this mission is at cross-purposes with the health and well-being of dolphins who have the misfortune of migrating through the waters of Taiji. Countless dolphins have entered the infamous killing cove, only to leave as corpses or as slaves to a captive industry that IMATA members sustain on a daily basis. It is common practice in Taiji for trainers, who allegedly love dolphins, to stand side-by-side with dolphin killers as they select candidates for the dolphin show. The dolphins left behind, those too old to train or too scarred to be appealing, are slaughtered. Those taken for training are generally moved to the sea pens at Dolphin Base and are then prepared for their hellish circus performer lives at the hands of IMATA trainers.
