Achieving Equality through Socialism leads to Misery for all (Adapted from Speak Up Now website.) An argument in class by the students that socialism is good and brings about equality in society led to a professor to conduct an in-class experiment on socialism. As you know, socialism is an economic system based on the Marxist dictum; from each according to their ability, to each according to their need. Socialists take from those who work and produce, and give to those who produce nothing or very little. To test the validity of socialism and see how it works in the real world, the class agreed all grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same averaged grade. No one would receive an A, but no one would fail and the greater good would be served and there would be equality in class. After the 1st test the grades were averaged and everyone in the class received a grade B (70 %). The students who studied hard were upset since their A (90% marks) was brought down to B (70 %), but students who studied very little were delighted since their D (40 % mark) was raised to B (70%) and were more convinced than ever socialism was the way to go. As the 2nd test rolled around, happy (bottom) students who barely studied at all on the first test and received B (70 %), didn’t even care to study coz they passed anyway. And the top students who scored A (90%) on the first test but were given only B (70%), saw no point in studying that hard again, so they studied less too. The averaged grade on second test was C (50%), which everyone received regardless of what any student actually earned because that’s socialism, take from those who work hard, and give it to those who don’t work. By the 3rd test, the hardworking students were totally disappointed and didn’t even care to open books. Best ones got only grade C (50% marks). Bottom students, who were elated to get free ride failed as always. In the 3rd test, the average grade for the whole class was a rock-solid F (below 40% marks). Everyone in the class had failed!! There was bickering, blame-game and finger pointing in class accusing each other of not working hard and giving up, etc. In reality, the more socialism is imposed on a society, the faster the society fails because no one, not even the most idealistic socialists, will work very hard for very long if most of what you earn is taken away and given to others. In the real world, no one is willing to work hard and receive less than they deserve so others can benefit. If the incentive of personal gain is taken away, producers eventually quit producing and hard working people stop putting in their best efforts. The A students were not willing to carry the C, D and F students on their back. So instead of some students failing and some doing well, everyone failed, equality was achieved and the truth about socialism was painfully revealed. Socialism is the great equalizer, always leading to equal misery for all.
