Aconcagua Climbing Expedition - Day 1: After one night at the former Ski Resort in Penitentes (Ayelen), we drove 15 minutes to Punta de Vacas (8,000 ft.), where we began our 3-day, 30-mile trek, into Plaza Argentina (13,800 ft.), which served as Base Camp for our expedition. During the 3-day trek to Base Camp, mules carried our gear allowing us to enjoy the trek without heavy loads (around 20-25 lbs). On the approach to Base Camp, we would walk through green desert valleys dramatically enclosed between the mountains of the Andes. Once in a while, we got a glimpse of wildlife, specifically condors and guanacos. Our first camping night was at Pampa de Las Leñas (9,000 ft.).
