This is a day on which people come together across divides in support of maintaining a sustainable Colorado River. Last year, progressives and conservatives came together in support of river. This year, urban and rural interests will unite. It takes place on July 25th each year, as this was the day in 1921 when Congress re-named the river from the “Grand” to the “Colorado”. It is produced by a wide coalition of organizations including National Young Farmers Union, Save the Colorado, Protect the Flows and Nuestro Rio. Go here for the fact sheet. coloradoriverday/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/ColoradoRiverDay_2013_FactSheet.pdf Why now? The Colorado River is at a crossroads. Demand on the river’s water now exceeds its supply. We need to bring the river back into balance in order to both sustain this lifeline of the West and to keep water affordable for people who need it. The recently completed Colorado River Basin Study demonstrated that water conservation and re-use alone can yield at least 3 million acre feet of water and is the most cost-effective and easily implementable way to bring water supply and demand on the Colorado River back into balance. This Colorado River day mayors and locally elected officials from both large cities and rural communities as well as farmers across Southwest are joining together to show that we can find common sense solutions to our water imbalances that promote efficiency while also providing the water we need for our cities, communities and farms.
