Active Games D&G - Dalbeattie pupils win Silver in both the girls and boys cycling event. Well done to them. Over 500 children representing 16 countries of the Commonwealth converged on Dumfries on Saturday 7 September for a fantastic day of sporting competition. The event included its own opening and closing ceremonies, reflecting the events of London 2012 and Glasgow 2014 for the children of Dumfries and Galloway. The children were joined by seven sporting ambassadors including Olympic Swimmer Kris Gilchrist, Scottish No.1 Gymnast Amy Regan, European Boccia Champion and London 2012 Paralympian, Stephen McGuire and Scottish Netball Player, Claire Brownie. Also making an appearance were Clyde, the mascot for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and ToBi, the Tour of Britain mascot ahead of the Tour of Britain next week. The event is one of our Council’s main Games Legacy initiatives and was staged with funding support provided by EventScotland, Gates Power Transmission Limited, DNG Media and The David Stevenson. In the opening ceremony, Dumfries and Galloway Council Leader Ivor Hyslop congratulated all the athletes who had earned a place at the games and told the children that success is not determined only by winning but also by how you compete. Following a flawless display by Maureen Smith’s team of young dancers and the arrival of the sporting ambassadors, there was a performance of the Scotland and Northern Ireland national anthems to welcome a delegation from Northern Ireland in a national Support 2nd Team initiative. This was followed by the arrival of the games baton, similar to the Queens Baton Relay, carried by Lexie Glendenning, aged 10, from Eastriggs At the end of the event, children were presented with Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in athletics, badminton, cycling, gymnastics, boccia, rugby 7s, netball and swimming by Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Council Leader Ivor Hyslop; Depute Council Leader, Brian Collins, Events Champion, Councillor Finlay Carson; and Linda Shields and Kevin Proudfoot from Gates Power Transmission. dumgal.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=4182&item=185
