Activist Transformations/Transforming Activism - First Annual Interdisciplinary Conference Hosted by the Illinois Student Association of Music Scholars (ISAMS) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign - April 26-27, 2014 The conference will feature a keynote address by Adriana Helbig (University of Pittsburgh). ISAMS is a graduate student organization at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. We seek to augment the academic experience, scholarship, and community of students in musicology (historical and ethnographic) and related fields of music scholarship, including (but not limited to) music theory, music education, and composition. Artistic endeavor has long been a means of engaging in social and political activism. Whether in the music of Bob Dylan or the French Revolutionary painting of Jacques-Louis David, creative mediums often help to construct, reflect, or comment on contemporary social or political situations. This conference explores how creativity, or its use, has the power to negotiate various types of conflict through mediation and education. Thus, we will consider the exchange between creativity and activism as well as their ability to transform one another. As the aim of the conference is to investigate the various ways art interacts with activist agendas, we encourage submissions that employ various disciplinary methodologies and approaches to this issue. We welcome proposals on a variety of creative mediums including music, visual art, performance art, dance, film, poetry and literature. Topics can include but are not limited to issues surrounding gender, race, ethnicity, class, economics, environment, and conflict. The ISAMS program committee invites proposals for 20-minute papers featuring original research on the conference topic from graduate students in any field of the humanities and social sciences. Proposals should include name, institutional affiliation, degree program (e.g., MA, MM, MFA, PhD, DMA), paper title, and an abstract of no more than 250 words. Proposals should be submitted to isamscholars at gmail by December 15, 2013. Applicants will be notified of their proposal’s status by February 1, 2014.
