Acts 1:6-8 says, “So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking Him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Notice He says, “you will be witnesses.” The word “witnesses” in the original language is actually the word martyr—it’s the Greek term for someone who gives testimony a legal case. In English the word “martyr” means someone who has died for their faith. So many Christians sealed their witness to Christ with their blood that words like “witnesses” and “martyrs” started to mean the same thing. It was so important to the early church to introduce people to Christ, they gave up their possessions, their families, their homes and sometimes even their lives to be His witnesses. That is why it’s important to us as a church. We want to grab that baton and introduce people to Jesus and His gift of life. Think about a person, outside your family, a friend or significant other that means the world to you. Once upon a time, you did not know them, but someone or something introduced you. The introducer may be long gone, but the friend, the spouse, the significant other remains. There’s power in introductions, and we get to introduce people to the most powerful person they will ever know!
