Acts 23:9 “LET US NOT FIGHT AGAINST GOD.” A telling and significant textual omission is found in the Vatican Versions in Acts 23:9. In Acts 23 the the Pharisees and the Sadducees are initially united in their opposition to the apostle Paul who had been preaching the gospel of the grace of God in the risen Christ. And then they begin to fight and argue among themselves. In the King James Bible we read: “And there arose a great cry: and the scribes that were of the Pharisees’ part arose, and strove, saying, We find no evil in this man: but if a spirit or an angel hath spoken to him, LET US NOT FIGHT AGAINST GOD.” The words in question that are omitted by all Catholic bible versions and today’s new Vatican Versions like the ESV, NIV, NASB, NET, Holman, Jehovah Witness New World Translation are “Let us not fight against God.” - μη θεομαχωμεν This reading - “Let us not fight against God” - is the reading found in the Majority of all manuscripts as well as the Textus Receptus and the Reformation Bibles in all languages. However the corruptions and uncertainties of the Critical text Vatican versions is seen in their omission and in the blank space found even within the pages of the UBS/Nestle-Aland critical Greek text, and by the introduction of additional words to the text in an attempt to have the verse make any sense at all. The last two words of this verse - μη θεομαχωμεν - are omitted in the Vatican Versions, which when translated into English and foreign languages becomes “LET US NOT FIGHT AGAINST GOD.” The Westcott-Hort/UBS/Nestle-Aland/Vatican texts leave a blank space , and ADD words to their translations in an attempt to have their versions make sense. For example, the Catholic Douay-Rheims version, NIV, NET, RSV and ESV say: “We find nothing wrong with this man,” they said. “WHAT if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?” There is NO word in any text for the word “WHAT”, and it is not a question in the Traditional texts. The NASB and the Catholic New Jerusalem bible 1985 have: “We find nothing wrong with this man; SUPPOSE a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?” Again, there is NO word in any text for “SUPPOSE”, and it is not a question. The Names of God Bible (another Critical text version) has “We don’t find anything wrong with this man. MAYBE a spirit or an angel ACTUALLY spoke to him!” Here they make it an exclamation rather than a question like the ESV, NIV, NASB have it, and they ADD the words “MAYBE” and “ACTUALLY” so it makes some kind of sense. The Catholic St. Joseph NAB 1970, Darby and the Jehovah Witness New World Translation are at least honest in following their Nestle-Aland/critical texts and they read: “We do not find this man guilty of any crime. If a spirit or an angel has spoken to him . . .” They just leave the sentence dangling. Lamsa’s translation of the Syriac Peshitta is of no help here at all. It reads differently that all of them, saying: “We find no fault with this man; and if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him, THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT.” The Hebraic Roots Bible 2012 (supposedly translated from the Aramaic) has “We find nothing evil in this man. And, if a spirit spoke to him, or an angel, LET US NOT FIGHT AGAINST THAT.” Acts 23:9 “LET US NOT FIGHT AGAINST GOD.” Agreeing with the King James Bible are Tyndale 1534, Coverdale 1534, the Great Bible 1540, Matthew’s Bible 1549, the Bishops’ Bible 1568, the Geneva Bible 1587 - “let vs not fight against God.”, John Wesley’s N.T. 1755, Worsley Version 1770, Webster’s Translation 1833, Living Oracles 1835, Young’s 1898, the NKJV 1982, The Word of Yah 1993, Interlinear Greek N.T. 1997 (Larry Pierce), Third Millennium Bible 1998, God’s First Truth 1999, Last Days Bible 1999, Sacred Scriptures Family of Yah 2001 - “Let us not fight against Yahweh.”, The Evidence Bible 2003, Complete Apostle’s Bible 2005, J.P. Green’s literal 2005, The Resurrection Life N.T. 2005 (Vince Garcia), Bond Slave Version 2009, English Majority Text Version 2009, Jubilee Bible 2010, Holy Scriptures VW Edition 2010, Hebraic Transliteration Scripture 2010 - “Let us not fight against Elohim”, Online Interlinear 2010 (André de Mol), the Biblos Interlinear Bible 2011, the Modern Literal Version N.T. 2012, and the World English Bible 2012 - “LET US NOT FIGHT AGAINST GOD.” Also agreeing with the Traditional Reformation Text are the Modern Greek Bible - ας μη θεομαχωμεν.” as well as the Modern Hebrew Bible - אליו או מלאך אל נלחמה באלהים׃ Among foreign language Bibles that contain the words “LET US NOT FIGHT AGAINST GOD” are Luther’s German bible 1545 and the 2000 German Schlachter bible - “so können wir mit Gott nicht streiten.”, the French Martin 1744, Ostervald 1996, French Louis Segond 2007 - “ne combattons point contre Dieu.”, the Spanish Sagradas Escrituras 1569, Cipriano de Valera 1602, Reina Valera 1909 - 1995 - “no peleemos contra Dios.”, the Italian Diodati 1649 , La Nuova Diodati 1991 and Riveduta 2006 - “non combattiamo contro a Dio.”, the Portuguese Almeida Actualizada 2009 - “não resistamos a Deus.” and the Portuguese A Biblia Sagrada - “no lutemos contra Deus.”, the Czech Kralicka bible - “nebojujme s Bohem.”, Hungarian Karoli bible - “ne tusakodjunk Isten ellen.”, the Russian Synodal Version - “не будем противиться Богу.”, Smith & van Dyke’s Arabic bible - رديّا في هذا الانسان. وان كان روح او ملاك قد كلمه فلا نحاربنّ الله Other foreign language bibles that read “LET US NOT FIGHT AGAINST GOD” are the Afrikaans bible 1953 - “laat ons nie teen God stry nie.”, the 2014 Romanian Fidela Bible - “să nu ne luptăm împotriva lui Dumnezeu.”, the Dutch Staten Vertaling bible - “laat ons tegen God niet strijden.”, Lithuanian bible - “nesipriešinkime Dievui!”, the Polish Updated Gdansk Bible 2013 - “to nie walczmy z Bogiem.”, the Ukranian Bible - “не противмося Богові.” and the Tagalog Ang Salita ng Diyos bible 1998 - “huwag nating kalabanin ang Diyos.” No one who “uses” any of the modern versions, and particularly the new Vatican Versions like the ESV, NIV, NASB, NET, Holman etc. that are based on the same “inter confessional” text as the modern Catholic Versions, believes that what they have are the complete and inerrant words of God. They have omitted literally thousands of words from the New Testament, rejected numerous Hebrew readings, and added hundreds of words to the Hebrew Old Testament, and not even in the same places. They also weaken and corrupt many truths found in God’s infallible Book - the King James Holy Bible. It seems that one of the things these modern version users and the Roman Catholic Church have in common is their belief that NO Bible is the infallible words of God and their opposition to the King James Bible.
