Actual conversation at Can Can Brasserie in Carytown: Me: OK, question of the day: do you go to church or not? If so, why, and if not, why not? Ready? Go! Barista 1: I dont go, and its mostly because Im lazy. Me: And honest! Next? Barista 2: I dont go, and its because I havent found a church where I feel comfortable, you know? I mean Ive tried, but I sit there feeling...uncomfortable. Me: Ive heard that people usually know in the first fifteen minutes whether or not they are going to join a church. There must be a vibe that people pick up on quickly, one way or the other. Im sorry you havent found a church with a good vibe. I hope you wont give up. Barista 3: I DO go to church. I need it. It really helps me get centered. I grew up Catholic and I loved all the holiness, but now I go to a non-denominational church. I like it. I go to the early service. Im a very spiritual person. I had a chance to talk with Barista 1 later and she confessed that a friend had invited her to church repeatedly, but Sunday was her only day to sleep in, and she didnt want to get up. I used to go to church, she said. I just got out of the habit. That can happen, I said. Yeah... she said, looking thoughtful, and then I said, I have a feeling next time your friend invites you to church youll go, just because weve had this conversation. Maybe I will, she said, and then added, Thanks for asking. Ive asked six people since Sunday if they go to church. To a person each one has thanked me for asking. Is there someone near you just waiting to have this conversation?
