Adapted from a response to the SDI list-serve.... If you subscribe to the generalised principles of diversity generators and conformity enforcers put forward by Howard Bloom Bloom, then there is a lot of overlap between Sigmund Freuds Psychoanalytic Theory and Spiral Dynamics Integral. The Id is the self-oriented tendency, reaching its apogee in RED, and appears to be driven primarily from the limbic system, long associated with feelings and desires. The others-referencing tendency is represented by the Ego/PURPLE conforming to be accepted and the Superegos Conscience can be matched to BLUEs do-the-right-thing. The Superegos Ego Ideal of how things should be seems more to fit with GREEN. The conformity enforcing seems to involve the inhibitory circuits of the lower frontal cortex. Have a look at A Biological Basis for vMEMES…? - integratedsociopsychology.net/biological_basis-vmemes.html. The groundbreaking work done by Sven Caspars et al (2012), involving Marc Lucas and mapping values choices (based on the respective work of Clare W Graves and Jane Loevinger) via an fMRI scanner, in many ways parallels the brain anatomical discoveries of Mark Solms (1999, 2000) who was using PET scans to investigate Freuds ideas on dreaming. On several occasions in the past, Don Edward Beck has talked about different wraps around the same invisible Spiral…and I suspect thats what were really talking about here. Where there are differences between Freud and Graves, Id take Graves every time. For all the brilliance of his observations, Freud was using his imagination on a limited sample of case studies. Graves did 30 years of methodical research. If youve got someone who understands Freud, it seems natural to me to use Freuds 3-part mind as a lead-in to talk about Graves 8-part mind. Similar to the way you can use Maslow to lead in to Graves/SDi.
