Adding some more memories...the wreckers especially the man Willy Hookem and Run Harshman and his very able crew. The first years they were stationed by the start/finish line and got a great view of the pit lane. Of course the furst year it wasnt too crowded and people were just happy to finish. The there was the race logic ( I do think that is an oxymoron tho...)as to whether it was better to be before or after the s/f line. I got offered all kinds of things for a prime spot- a chance to drive( when I had kept my Regional license active), dinner, a boat load of Haagen Daz ice cream, and so on. Willy loved to watch the chinese firedrill (and I know that is not politically correct, so as John McGill would say bite me!) that crews executed during pit stops. He especially liked it the year that local sportscaster Jim Mueller drove his Mustang with football pros Tom Cousineau and Bob Golic as his refuelers. Those guys were amazing- remember they could be 11 gal bottles filled with gasoline - approx 80# a piece. Will watched as Bob and Tim would carry a full bottle in each hand and flip it like a baby bottle into the filler neck! Then to get the last drops in they WOULD PICK UP A CORNER OF THE MUSTANG AND BURP IT. Willy told me later he should have had to pay for that quality entertainment!
