Additional Reports of Late Blight in New Jersey Beth Gugino, Extension Vegetable Pathologist, Penn State Univ. Within the past week there have been additional confirmed reports of late blight on both tomato and now potato in southern New Jersey in Salem Co. This is the first report of late blight on potato in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions. So far there have been no confirmed reports in PA although there have been several suspect samples that have been negative. The current weather pattern continues to be very favorable for late blight. Please continue to scout and monitor your fields regularly and use protectant fungicides at the very least. Extended spray intervals due to the frequent rains may leave your crops vulnerable. Products like Curzate and Tanos provide a slight bit of kickback activity but should be quickly followed by a product from another FRAC group. Additional fungicide recommendations can be found in the 2013 Commercial Vegetable Production Guide. If you suspect late blight on your farm, please contact your local Penn State Extension Office or let me know via email at [email protected] or by phone at 814-865-7328. We are interested in collecting samples so we can better understand how the pathogen population is changing both within and across growing seasons. Additional images of late blight on tomatoes and potatoes can be found at the Penn State Extension Vegetable and Small Fruit website under the Vegetable Disease Images link on the homepage at extension.psu.edu/plants/vegetable-fruit. Also for the information regarding where the latest confirmed outbreaks have been reported and to receive email or text alerts about when late blight has been confirmed with a personally defined radius from your location visit usablight.org.
