Adieu Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, the brilliant lawyer, consummate jurist, great advocate of equity, Socrates of the golden years of the Nigerian Supreme Court, and Lord Denning of the Nigerian judiciary. I recall how my former boss, Chief Mike Ahamba SAN, used to remind me that our generation of lawyers missed a lot having not encountered Oputa on the Bench. I also remember with nostalgia the day Oputa delivered a very rich and highly intellectual lecture on fair hearing at the Faculty of Law, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC). I was there and still have a copy of the rich paper. On why his maverick son, Charly Boy, chose music instead of law, Oputa informed us that Prof. Cheshires son chose to found Cheshire Homes rather than follow his fathers footsteps, and is more famous today than his father. What a huge loss to the legal profession, judiciary and Nigeria? May his soul rest in perfect peace!
