Adomi Bridge closes to traffic Today.. As part of NDC 2012 manifesto to improve access to major centers of population, production and tourism and to ensure maintenance of existing road infrastructure; p53 • The Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region will be closed to vehicular and human traffic on Monday, March 10, 2014 for major rehabilitation works to begin. • The 56-year-old bridge connects some parts of the country such as Juapong in the North Tongu District, Ho and Hohoe. • The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) will close the bridge and simultaneously launch ferry services at Senchi and Akrade, two communities in the Eastern Region, to enable commuters and goods to cross River Volta. • The ferry services would, however, operate from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily for the period of the work. • Each of the ferries had a capacity of 300 tonnes, and would be able to carry at least four articulated trucks or 12 vehicles at a time. • Vehicles from Accra going to Ho and beyond have been advised to use the Accra-Sogakope-Adidome road and vice versa. • The bridge will be closed for 24 months, according to the Chief Executive Officer of the GHA, Mr. Micheal Abbey, and Messrs Bilfinger MCE GmbH of Austria will undertake the rehabilitation works within 22 months. • The government secured 12.9 million Euros from the Bank of Austria to replace the entire edifice, though the original design would be maintained. • Some works have been carried out on the bridge over the years, but this is the first time such a major rehabilitation is being done.
