Adoption 9. I dont know how many times we said we were done, I even told our adoption worker to destroy our homestudy ! Then I would get a update of children to put in the portfolio and the passion would stir again. I cant explain it other then a drive inside you that wont rest, Usually its me bringing a picture to Willie, look at this one , he or she could fit in what do you think I also want to state here that there were many children we were not selected for and quite a few we turned down for not being a good fit. This time was different , Willie was thumbing through a portfolio of children available for adoption from California and he came to me and saidwhat do you think about him? he was 21 months old a little boy who had been exposed to methamphetamines .We were selected, the appropriate paperwork was sent and we had our airline tickets in hand when the adoption worker called, telling us that when the foster mom saw our picture and the fact we were white she changed her mind after saying no she would not adopt him but now she would. The adoption worker said she was going to fight this because she and some therapist had concerns about his care in the home. She asked if we were willing to do a legal risk, meaning go on with our plans but we could not go to court to finalize the adoption until the judge ruled best interest of the child . The foster mom would not let us in her home so we went to his preschool to meet him ( Philip ) who we changed to Elijah Philip .He was a skinny sickly looking toddler and he was having a asthma attack. We knew Elijah had a severe allergy to milk, I requested to take him to a Dr. He didnt talk and was just learning to walk at 2 years old. When we returned home with him I looked through all the food products for a hidden milk ingredient , so he would not get any milk products , he started to gain weight a lb a week! And his asthma got better. About 6 months after he was home with us we got word the judge ruled in our favor, we could adopt him, Do to his mothers drug use Elijah had major sensory issues and would rage when over stimulated. When he started kindergarten if another child bumped into him he would perceive it as a direct threat and would lash out. He was expelled from kindergarten twice . We finally homeschooled him for a couple of years. But found we were not the greatest home school parents so we decided to try him back in a different elementary school. The principle saw what we saw,Elijahs behavior was due to overload. Because of his overstimulation she decided to start him out in a self contained classroom. Slowly she mainstreamed him for short periods of time. The biggest thing was she didnt give up! One time she called and said with a shaking voice , Lori come get Elijah , he tore up my term paper for my masters and bit me! I said I understood and we would home school again. She said no just give me the weekend. We all held our breath when he entered middle school and had very few outbursts. Today Elijah is a very quiet young man who has learned to control his sensory integration problems. He is steady and has a wonderful sense of humor and a compassionate heart
