Adoption Awareness Month: Adoption is hard. Plain and simple. It has many faces, infant, toddler, grown teen, foster child, foreign child, black, white, both black and white. Happy, sad, hurt, confused, joyous, selfless, hurtful, hopeful. So, as our story is just that, OUR story, it may or may not resemble yours or someone you know that has adopted. A lot of times we are told ... Those children you have are SO blessed A lot of times WE say WE are so blessed. Or sometimes we are told what a great thing it was for us to have saved our littles from the terrible environment they were in. A lot of times people just dont understand. Adoption is not salvation. Adoption is not an instant fix or cure. What adoption is ... is love. Love beyond what we can ever hope to comprehend or even begin to value in the way that Jesus intends for it to be. A love that is selfless and most times hard. A love that often is is not returned. A love that knows no boundaries or barriers. A love that hurts and fights and struggles and is just plain hard. Not just some of the time, but a lot of the time. Adoption is a day in day out conscious decision to look beyond the reactions to the deep dark hurt thats inside, way way down inside. Sometimes so far down inside we cant even explain it or begin to understand it. But thats just it. Adoption is a choice to look beyond an explanation or a fix or even a solution or understanding. Adoption is a choice to help. A choice to come as close as we humanly possibly can to love as Jesus loves. And thats hard. We love these littles with a deep, hard, most times, selfless love that I cant even explain. Love is hard. Love hurts. Love changes. And Love is beautiful. Adoption is love. Adoption Awareness Month.
