Adoption Jigsaw In March 2013, Tony Abbott apologised for the trauma of forced adoptions. His speech included: “I cannot imagine a grief greater than that of a parent and a child parted from each other” and many other sentiments recognising the loss and grief for so many. Now Mr Abbott is making it easier to adopt from overseas - as if those mothers and children will not suffer, as if there is choice in those mothers relinquishing. The lets make adoption easier campaign is led by Deborra-lee Furness who we believe has been given around $2 million from private benefactors to support her cause. She presents it as rescuing children and that every person has a right to be a parent. However every objective report I have read states that most children are not orphans but have relatives who are not able to care for them due to poverty - so if it were really about kids you would help their families to raise them. In addition there are many, many more people wishing to adopt the available babies than there are babies needing families. This leads to kidnapping and child trafficking - it is a traditional supply and demand market. People are not clamouring to adopt the older and special needs kids in overseas countries or for that matter older kids in long term foster care in Australia. This week is National Adoption Awareness Week - started by Ms Furness and she is and will be all over the media. It will be interesting to see if the media releases from Jigsaw as well as like organisations around Australia are picked up at all - we want people to understand the complexities of adoption and the potential life long consequences for every person. We dont want past mistakes of forced adoptions repeated. Sadly Ms Furness has unprecedented access to the media - and now she is being nominated for Australian of the Year. See the link below (its not uploading the article). Given that it is National Awareness Week - have a voice, both here but also writing to media outlets about the reality of adoption. abc.net.au/…/deborra-lee-furness-honoure…/5878932
