Adoption is such a powerful bridge for at risk children in our society who have been placed in the U.S Child Welfare system. Whether you are a non-relative adoptive parent or a kinship relative adoptive parent you matter. Recent AFCAR reports suggests that about half a million children are currently documented in the foster care system. There are non-relative adoptions and kinship relative adoptions that are available. Although non-relative adoptive parents are given the most credit for playing their part in the civic community efforts of adopting children who need a home, I want to acknowledge Kinship Relatives who get down into the trenches and support their family in crisis by becoming caregivers and a support system for the biological parents who are struggling with addiction, incarceration, poverty, and mental health issues. I think that organizations like Kids Central Kinship Care should be commended for how successful they are in undergirding relatives who have the courage to help out and devise a way to meet the needs of their own flesh and blood versus having the child orbit in space in the foster care system. There are so many organizations that support kinship care but are not celebrated enough. Job well done!
