Advent Towards Christmas Day and we are going to repeat this - TopicsExpress

Advent Towards Christmas Day and we are going to repeat this reading, simply because the narrative has so much in it! We have all heard the debate that the 25th December was a ‘pagan’ holiday and the birth of Christ was laid on top of it and so we are supposed to be ‘really’ celebrating a pagan festival, NO WE ARE NOT. Put simply, we don’t know the actual date of Jesus’ birth, only that we understand it was somewhere around this time period, 9 months from when it was believed He was conceived (if anyone knows how they know that, please let us know and no 9 months before we believe He was born is not the answer!). It may or may not have been on the 25th of December, the date itself does not matter, the fact that it happened does! That God came down in ‘person’ is the point, not the precise date and time to the second. Let us respond with a real answer – ‘do you know it actually happened? Let me tell you more…’ So now let us make a joyful sound, it is Christmas time! Bible Reading – Luke 1:26-38 God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, ‘Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The Lord is with you.’ Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favour with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants for ever; his kingdom will never end.’ ‘How will this be,’ Mary asked the angel, ‘since I am a virgin?’ The angel answered, ‘The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God……’ ‘I am the Lord’s servant,’ Mary answered. ‘May your word to me be fulfilled.’ Then the angel left her. Prayer for the Day: O Dayspring 21st December 2014 Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world. Let your light shine upon us that we may reflect your love to all people. You are Lord for ever and ever. Amen https://youtube/watch?v=_6YjkYSIVBA
