Advice Please! Repost from Anonymous My son has always been a poor sleeper from infancy. He is 11 now. When we put him to bed he spends a least 2 hours+ awake, so he reads or draws in bed. He says it relaxes him. We thought putting him to bed later would result in him sleeping faster, but he still spends 2 hours or more awake! He is so, so tired when he goes to bed and has a hard time turning off his brain. He is gifted and I heard this is a trait. Heres what we do or have tried: 1. We have consistent bedtimes and no screen time before bed. 2. Desserts in the afternoon instead of after dinner on school nights, if any. 2. Yoga breathing at bedtime 3. Pushing imaginary buttons on his head and chest to switch on or off busy brain, and relaxation, sleep mode, etc. He likes the fun imagery . 4. He insists on a night light as he is afraid of the dark, however I heard it disrupts melatonin levels. I turn it off sometimes when he is asleep but he turns it back on sometime in the middle of the night. 5. He is a low energy child in general, however he gets sufficient exercise during the day. Can melatonin be safely given to a child? How about magnesium for kids? And how much? Any suggestions for activities, diet and natural remedies to help him sleep better would be much appreciated!
