Advocate Dali Mpofu says it was a personal decision to resign - TopicsExpress

Advocate Dali Mpofu says it was a personal decision to resign from the African National Congress (ANC) and join Julius Malemas Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). Mpofu has this week handed over his resignation to the ANCs Saxonwold branch, whose members include businessman Atul Gupta. He told Eyewitness News his decision to leave the ANC was a long time coming. “I think for me, I would say it was the kind of policies that were taken at the Mangaung conference including the adoption of the National Development Plan which I dont believe is the kind of remedy needed for the acute problems of South Africa.” Mpofu is currently representing the injured and arrested miners at the Marikana Commission of Inquiry. He returned to the inquiry last month after the South Gauteng High Court ruled that the state must provide legal funding for the miners. Mpofu had withdrawn from the inquiry while attempting to secure state funding saying its unfair that police and other state parties have funding for private lawyers, while miners have to rely on representation from evidence leaders. President Jacob Zuma set up the inquiry to determine whether officers were justified in using deadly force on the day 34 miners were gunned down at the hands of police on 16 August 2012. Lonmin miners had embarked on an unprotected strike to demand higher wages. (Edited by Gia Kaplan)
