Afghanistan log, August 21st, 2014: Hello all. It looks like our quiet encampment with the Infantry may be coming to a close in a few days. I have been one of 7 members of the 909th Forward Surgical Team assigned with 50 infantry soldiers (from Ft Carson, no less). Its our job to be with them in case they incur any casualties from possible disgruntled members of the Afghan Army, whom they are advising in Zabul Province, just north of Kandahar. The Forward Surgical Team (FST) is in Expeditionary Mode at this late stage of the war, meaning it is split in half, supporting two different missions in two different parts of the country. From here the 7 of us will go back to Bagram Air Base (largest American base in the country) and be redeployed on another mission from there. We 7 consist of 2 general surgeons, 1 CRNA (anesthetist), 1 OR/ER nurse (who happens to also be the FST commander), 1 medic, 1 ICU nurse, and 1 Operating Room Tech (who happens to also be the FST NCO in charge, or Detachment Sergeant). As I have said before, I couldnt be fortunate enough to have drawn a better group of people to live in very close quarters with for the last 2 weeks. And that includes the infantry! The other half of the FST is in a place called Herrat, in western Afghanistan, working at a Spanish and Italian hospital. Evidently I may be sent to that half right after we get back to Bagram in a few days, to spell their general surgeon...at least thats what is being said today anyway. One never knows for sure out here until it actually happens and you can look back on it and say for certain yes, that happened. The nice thing is that I will have internet access for texting, etc then. Ive always been a jogger for my exercise, but never every day. Since Ive been here Ive missed only one or two days because theres just very little else to do. I wonder if Ill be able to run my dogs out of breath when I get home!
