Africa Day - 25 May Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963. On this day, leaders of 30 of the 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. On 26 May 2001, the OAU established its own successor, the African Union. However, the name and date of Africa Day has been retained as a celebration of African unity. The African Union, comprised of 53 member states, has brought together the continent of Africa to collectively address the challenges it has faced, such as armed conflict, climate change, and poverty. AU has established Political centers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 26 May 2001 and Midrand, South Africa on 9 July 2002. Africa Day 2014, marks the official closing of year-long celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the OAU-AU. Other Celebrations will be held around the world to commemorate Africa Day. It should also be noted that Africa Day is observed as a public holiday in only five African countries, that is, Ghana, Mali, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The African Union Commission is the Secretariat of the Union entrusted with executive functions. It is composed of 10 Officials. Amadi, Nigeria Chairperson-Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, South Africa Deputy Chairperson -Dr. Erastus Mwencha, Kenya Commissioner of Economic Affairs-Dr. Anthony Mothae Maruping, Lesotho Commissioner for Social Affairs-Dr. Mustapha Sidiki Kaloko, Sierra Leone Commissioner for Trade and Industry-Mrs. Fatima Haram Acyl, Chadian Commissioner for Infrastructure and energy-Dr. Elham Mahmoud Ahmed Ibrahim, Egypt Commissioner, Human Resources, Science and Technology-Dr. Martial De-Paul Ikounga, Congo Commissioner for Rural Economy and Agriculture -Mrs. Tumusiime Rhoda Peace, Uganda Commissioner for Peace and Security -Mr. Smail Chergui, Algeria Commissioner for Political Affairs -Dr. Aisha Abdullahi, Nigeria The mission of the Commission is to become “An efficient and value-adding institution driving the African integration and development process in close collaboration with African Union Member States, the Regional Economic Communities and African citizens”. The values to guide and govern the functioning and operations of the Commission are: Respect for diversity and teamwork; Think Africa above all; Transparency and accountability; Integrity and impartiality; Efficiency and professionalism; and Information and knowledge sharing.
