Africa Theme Park - Really???? Muldersdrift earmarked as potential site for theme park Print Send to a Friend The IDC is considering the feasibility of developing a theme park in the Muldersdrift area. It has put out a request for proposal to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the proposed project, which the IDC anticipates will be an overnight destination, not just a day visitor attraction, and will include hotels and conference facilities along with other tourist facilities like restaurants, retail outlets and souvenir shops. The tender document states: “Theme parks are star players in the tourism industry and play a special and important role in generating tourism demand. Theme parks are the main motivators of tourism trips to many destinations and core elements of the tourism product.” The tourism business unit of the IDC says it has identified the establishment of a world-class theme park in SA as a sector strategy, mainly as a result of the anticipated positive impact it would have on the economy, specifically in terms of job creation, local development and investment in world-class infrastructure and logistics. In January this year, through an open tender process, the IDC appointed a service provider to identify appropriate sites for the development of the theme park. The results identified the Muldersdrift area of Mogale City as the potential area for the park. The project team has decided to procure the services of a consulting firm that specialises in conducting pre-feasibility studies for a variety of leisure attractions to assist with the theme park pre-feasibility study, as well as recommend which of the 47 potential Muldersdrift sites identified would be most suitable for the development. The purpose of the study will be to gauge the need, viability, infrastructure requirements, product offering and packaging, potential market support, forecast usage, costs, benefits and multiplier effects of the theme park within SA.
