After 6 years of tertiary studies, having obtained BA, BComm - TopicsExpress

After 6 years of tertiary studies, having obtained BA, BComm (hons) degrees & an Advanced Diploma in Management (ADM), my son and his partner, who also have LLB, BComm(hons) degrees & ADM diploma, both with limited work experience, informed me that they do not intend to apply for jobs & wish to pursue their own business ventures. My first inclination was to grab my head with both hands & inform these two 24 year old young men to go and work and obtain some work experience first. But then I listened to them, their passion, their resolve to be part of the entrepreneurial fraternity & create jobs, contribute to the economy and to become financially independent through their own creativity and hard work, and I reclined somewhat. My generation did not have the privilege to dream the kind of dreams the young generation dream, & did not want to be an obstacle to their dreams. My old-school mentality dictates to me that people with their kind of academic qualifications can get good jobs, and need not pursue the uncertain world of business. However, as I said, I am old-school:-) My second inclination was to establish exactly who this partner of my son was, to comfort myself that he is at least partnered with a reliable & committed partner in his ventures. How pleasantly surprised I was:-) The young man is from the Lowveld, served on the SRC at UWC on a SASCO ticket, and can properly engage me on the politics of the day. My son is not interested in political conversation, but has sound political values in my view, and does not participate in political discussion. It seems the two have a very clear understanding and respect for each others different spaces of interest, but have much more common interests than differences and trust each other completely. This maturity pleased me immensely. After some engagement I satisfied myself that my son made an excellent choice for a partner, who shares his vision, commitment and passion. Well, as a father, I have now resolved to assist these young men in whichever way I can with the inner confidence that they will succeed and make their dreams reality. They start off with nothing except a concept, academic training & their youthful passion. May God bless their ventures.
