After 71 long years my mother has finally been recognised for her service during WW2 with the following medals:. War Medal 1939-1945 Australia Service Medal 1939-1945 General Service Badge I applied on her behalf (without her knowledge) after a lifetime of believing her story that her service was of little consequence….she was so very wrong! Anybody who put on a uniform during those dark days placed their life in the hands of the government to do with what they chose for the defence of the country. For me this is also recognition of a life well lived. As an orphaned child of the depression she has experienced much hardship but has lived a resilient life of selfless service to our family without any bitterness or envy toward others with so much more. Paul Keating once said that hers was this country’s greatest generation, he was right and we will never see the likes of them again. We are so privileged to have her with us still. So thank you Private Joan Josephine Catherine Jones (nee Miller) VF396436, from proud family and friends and a grateful nation. Any messages to Mum may be left as comments and we will pass them on. Better still pop in and congratulate her yourself.
