After 9/11, the sound of the Great Highland Bagpipes were often heard by New Yorkers and others around the country, as bagpipers from police and fire departments played at the numerous funerals of first responders. The haunting skirl of the pipes was a musical outpouring of grief for all those who died that day in the towers, the planes, and the Pentagon. The sound of those majestic pipes, the "deadlie clarions"* of the ancient Highland warriors, however, was also a rallying cry, a Celtic war cry of old to say "we are suffering now, but we will not be defeated." Proud of my Scottish ancestry...the sound the the bagpipes moves me deeply.
