After Cricket, Hockey, Badminton, Kabbadi and Football leagues, its now the turn of the Tennis league. The Champions Tennis League (CLT) began on Monday, with Delhi Dreams squaring off with Punjab Marshalls and Hyderabad Aces taking on Bangalore Raptors. The other two franchises among the 6 are: Mumbai Masters and Pune Marathas. Each team will play five matches - a singles between legends; Mixed Doubles; Womens Singles; Mens Doubles; Mens Singles. The rules of the championship: A total of 13 matches will be played over 10 days among the 6 teams, divided into 2 zones. Each team has 4 players, each Tie consists of Five Sets; Each Set is a Match; and the first player(s) {singles/doubles), winning the 6 games, wins the Set and the Match. The Zonal Champions will compete against each other. The Zonal Champions are the teams with the highest number of games won in their respective zone. In the sets played, the tie-breaker rule will be applicable at 5-5 and not 6-6; the tie-breaker will be best of 9 points. In the first Tie played on Monday at the DLTA courts in Delhi, Juan Carlos Ferrero of Delhi and Greg Rusedski of Punjab took the courts. Ferrero won it 6-1. In the mixed doubles, Kevin Anderson and Jelena Jankovic of Delhi lost to the Punjabs team of Leander Paes and Garbine Murguza 3-6. In the third match, womens singles, Jankovic beat Murguza 6-5; in the mens doubles, Kevin Anderson and Sanam Singh of Delhi lost to Punjabs Leander Paes and Somdev Devvarman 4-6. In the last match, mens singles, Anderson defeated Devvarman 6-1. Thus, Delhi Dreams won the tie 25-19. In the second Tie, played on Monday at Hyderabad, Hyderabad Aces beat Bangalore Raptors by 27-25. The first Set was won by Hyderabads Mark Philippoussis against Bangalores Thomas Enqvist 6-5 (5-2 in the tie-breaker); while in the second Set, Bangalores mixed pair of Venus Williams and Feliciano Lopez got the better of Hyderabadi pair of Mikhail Youzhny and Martina Hingis 6-5. Set 3 was won by Hyderabads Hingis against Williams by 6-3, while the fourth Set was also won by 6-3 by the Hyderabadi pair of Youzhny and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan against Lopez and Ramkumar Ramanathan. The fifth Set was won by Bangalores Lopez against Youzhny 6-3.
