After Facebook dropped organic reach, everyone started squawking - one crowd disappointed in the near-uselessness of a large Facebook audience (without boosting posts), another crowd saying FB has the right to make money. And thats right - FB does have the right to make money. But theyre EXPLICITLY claiming that money is not why theyre doing it. From their ads marketing team: Is organic reach dropping because Facebook is trying to make more money? No. Our goal is always to provide the best experience for the people that use Facebook. We believe that delivering the best experiences for people also benefits the businesses that use Facebook. If people are more active and engaged with stories that appear in News Feed, they are also more likely to be active and engaged with content from businesses. (https://facebook/business/news/Organic-Reach-on-Facebook) Except that the way I see it, theyre ignoring their users opinions. Basically no one I talk to is happy with what they see in their feed: They see random activity from acquaintances and random group posts instead of actual friends and pages they opted into see. People want more control over what they see, to be able to indicate see less and see more of this or that. They could opt in themselves how many posts from a page they want to see when they Like a page. It does not follow that making businesses pay to promote content will increase the quality of content in someones feed. It also does not follow that showing fewer stories increases quality. (In fact, I wish I saw more stories each time I logged in than FB actually delivers.) It also does not follow that the more likes a post gets, the better quality of a post it is. But these opinions aside, I am not griping that FB is charging money. Im scoffing at their claim that this is all about the experience. If it actually is, I think theyre using bad logic.
