After Zach de la Rochas collaboration on Run the Jewels 2 and that - TopicsExpress

After Zach de la Rochas collaboration on Run the Jewels 2 and that sweet video of a marching band doing an epic rendition of Killing in the Name, Ive been checking out some old Rage Against the Machine again. They were a gateway band for me when I was 14 and transitioning from hip-hop into punk-rock. I cast them aside pretty fast though, as soon as I got into real punk I decided RATM was jock music, even though they were political. Before that, though, I remember riding around with some older friends, finding places to skate, and jamming this song full blast with the windows down. The ending of this track is still pure catharsis. Anyone who doubts the influence of music, just picture me and my friends as teenagers in a small Texas town, population 4000, nothing to do, just singing our hearts out to this song at the top of our lungs, knowing every line by heart to songs like Kill All the White Man, I Was a Pre-Teen McCarthyist, Smallpox Champion, every song by bands like Good Riddance, Fugazi, Dillinger Four, etc. It really was a big part of our education. I learned about everything from those bands, and they helped shape the way I still see the world today in a lot of ways. I have no idea how I would have turned out without the influence of those bands growing up.
