After a 2012 coup sent Mali into a year of war, the country has experienced an influx of international actors, including peace-keeping missions, non-governmental organizations, and donors. Due largely to these influences, several projects of transitional justice have been set into motion. However, a closer look reveals that these efforts are largely dislocated from the justice needs and desires of citizens themselves. ICTJs new publication, Possibilities and Challenges for Transitional Justice in Mali, presents views of victims and civil society groups that remain critical of the governments top-down approach. In the opinion of one member of the Northern Citizens Collective: “You should not go from the summit to the base. You have to listen. It is not in Bamako that you can resolve this crisis.”
