After a long day of professional development, Im imagining this scenario: If the EOCs and EOGs and NC Final Exams were removed from the picture completely, how would my teaching change? What practices would I stop doing and more importantly, what practices would I start doing? And why? Ive come to the conclusion that any practice or instruction Im doing SOLELY bc theres a state exam at the end of my course needs to stop. Its tragic to me that intense focus has been applied to the English and Language part of ELA but the Art part is being neglected. At what cost? Are we sacrificing the innate love of storytelling our students are born with in the name of skills and increased test scores? Are we sacrificing a curiosity and passion that can be nurtured in students for higher lexile reading levels and formulaic writing that scores well on tests? Soulless writing that in many cases is not even read by individuals but scored by computer programs? Have the Arts of ELA been lost forever or can we bring that back? I, for one, am starting a new quest.
