After a long day of traveling, we are back at Chazen, for our last night on safari. Tomorrow we head to our respective destinations--some home, some to tour Cape Town, and Im staying in Johannesburg to visit with my friends at FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre. During our travels, I collected two more trophies, a marital eagle and a pair of very rare crowned cranes. In Africa, as in the U.S., electric wires present the danger of electrocution to large birds, such as eagles. The martial eagle is a very large, with a wingspan over two meters. Here he sits between wires that could easily kill him if he touches two at once...something he could easily do. We were actually speeding along the highway when we spotted the crowned cranes at the edge of a small pond. In all my years of traveling to Africa, I have only seen two others, so this doubles my life total for this rare species. They were very obliging with their poses, even though at a distance of about 100 yards.
